For the second year in a row, Lyra in Africa teamed up with Ride25 to host our inspiring "Walk to School" event. This unique initiative connects global supporters directly with the heart of our mission: ensuring girls in rural Tanzania can complete their secondary education safely.
A Journey of Connection and Learning
Last year the “Walk to School” took place in Iringa, Tanzania, where Lyra successfully has built 15 school hostels. This year’s trip took us to Dodoma where Lyra has been expanding. A group of UK based "Lyra Friends" including parents and children ,traveled to rural Dodoma for an unforgettable cultural exchange. Walking side by side with local schoolgirls, our supporters experienced firsthand the grueling reality these young women face just to get an education.
The Reality Facing Rural Girls
In rural Tanzania, the barriers to education are steep:
Long Distances: Girls often face exhausting, unsafe walks of up to 17 kilometers to reach the nearest secondary school.
High Risks: Without safe housing, many are forced into insecure, unsupervised rentals near schools leaving them vulnerable to exploitation.
Compounding Crises: These unsafe living conditions directly contribute to high dropout rates and child marriage. Tragically, 30% of girls in Tanzania are married before the age of 18.
Why Your Support Matters
Education changes everything. Every single year a girl stays in school significantly boosts her future income, creating healthier families and thriving communities.
