Lyra in Africa strengthens girls’ hostel safety through caregiver training
Iringa, Tanzania | 8–10 June 2026
Lyra in Africa conducted a three day capacity building training for 24 Mama Matrons and Hostel Teachers from 13 partner schools to strengthen the safety, protection, and well being of girls living in school hostels.
Held in Iringa, the training covered child protection and safeguarding, adolescent development, guidance and counselling, first aid, sexual and reproductive health, and gender based violence prevention. Sessions were facilitated by social welfare and health professionals through practical demonstrations, group discussions, and case studies.
The training recorded a significant improvement in participants’ knowledge, with average assessment scores rising from 36% before the training to 76% afterwards, representing a 40-percentage-point gain.
Participants also developed school-specific action plans to improve hostel care, safeguarding practices, and support for girls.
Through this initiative, Lyra in Africa continues to strengthen the capacity of school caregivers and promote safe, supportive environments where girls can access education, grow, and reach their full potential.
