Msanga Girls Hostel

This May, Lyra in Africa celebrated a massive milestone: the official handover of the brand-new Msanga Secondary School girls' hostel, the 16th hostel Lyra has built since the programme began in 2012 and the first Lyra hostel to be constructed in Dodoma region. The construction was as ever a collaboration with the Chamwino District Council and the Msanga ward community.

This is far more than a building. It is a safe haven for over a 100 girls to live, learn, and thrive without fear, and without the long, unsafe walks to school that put so many girls at risk of dropping out or becoming pregnant. Inside, the hostel features fully equipped bedrooms with beds and mattresses, running water and electricity, 15 toilets and 11 bathrooms, including a toilet for disabled girls. It also includes a studio for a dedicated matron who ensures the wellbeing and safety of the girl hostellers.

With 635 students enrolled at Msanga Secondary School in 2026, the hostel's 104 places offer a vital lifeline to girls who face the greatest barriers to attending school
