Our vision is economically sustainable and vibrant communities in rural Tanzania.
We believe in the power of education to help end poverty. We work to equip youth, focusing on girls to drive systemic change, and create a positive multiplier effect throughout their rural communities.
We are community-led and partner with remote and rural communities where children are forced to drop out or leave school without vital basic skills.
Our infrastructure projects are designed with innovative green technology, sharing sustainability values and eco-friendly solutions with our local partners.
We are committed to the UN Sustainable Development Goals Agenda
Sustainability is at the heart of everything Lyra does. In 2020, Earth 51 carried out an independent and comprehensive analysis of Lyra’s operations to assess how well sustainability is embedded across the organisation. This review looked at everything from governance and programme delivery to infrastructure and long-term impact. We're proud to share that Lyra was awarded GOLD status, having demonstrated meaningful contributions to 15 out of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
This recognition reflects Lyra’s commitment to creating lasting, systemic change—not only in education, but in gender equality, climate action, economic opportunity, and community resilience. You can read the full report here.
Lyra’s Four Interconnected Pillars
GENDER EQUITY AND GIRLS’ EDUCATION
We invest in girls' education. Because every girl deserves to be in school and educated girls create prosperous communities, with healthier, smaller, better educated families.
ECONOMIC SECURITY AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP
We help communities open their minds to business opportunities through vocational skills and business training, so that families have enough income to feed and educate their children.
GREEN CONSTRUCTION AND WASH
Building sustainable hostels and safe environments for learning in rural Tanzania. Lyra’s green construction and Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) initiatives focus on delivering infrastructure that improves health, wellbeing and supports climate resilience.
DIGITAL LEARNING
In collaboration with our partners, Lyra’s digital education programme is designed to increase access to quality digital learning for young people in rural Tanzania, with a particular focus on girls. By integrating educational technology (EdTech) into our partner school classrooms and teacher training, we aim to close the education gap to bring global digital solutions to rural schools.
